This is actually one of the first cartoon characters I ever came up with, Herby Cole, “The Doctor of Love,” way back in 1976. . . And he was one of the few recurring characters I kept using over the years. He would keep popping up here and there in various comic strips all the way to the end of my run in 1995. Not a particularly great character, kind of one dimensional. But I liked how he looked — this kind of zany, crazed smile he usually sported. And he was one of my few characters that was upbeat, happy and positive. I never analyzed my characters much. But maybe subconsciously I felt that it was easier to be happy if you were half-crazy.
